Hopwood DePree is crazy about Christmas. Every December, his Beverley Hills home is dressed for the season by professional decorators, ready for the string of festive pool parties and dinners he hosts for his Hollywood friends.  

This year, however, the actor and director (who you may/may not remember from his Nineties heyday), is celebrating Christmas in a draughty hall just south of Rochdale, with homemade decorations and mince pies baked by his local guests.  

“The main rooms are still a bit rough and dusty but it’s going to be great,” he says, pausing to hang a fallen bauble back onto the tree….
